Background
Sucrochem
was
founded
in
2018
by
Dr.
Anne
Stark
and
Warwick
Thomson.
During
2016
and
2017
Anne
co-supervised
Warwick’s
master’s
thesis
as
the
South
African
Research
Chair
Initiative
(SARChI)
Research
Chair
in
Sugarcane
Biorefining
at
the
University
of
Kwazulu-Natal.
In
2018,
the
two
met
to
discuss
the
potential
areas
of
research
in
the
sugarcane
industry
when
the
concept
of
sugarcane
wax
was quickly revisited from 2016. Shortly thereafter, Sucrochem was founded.
Directors
Dr.
Anne
Stark
(Technical
Director)
holds
a
PhD
in
Chemistry
and
is
a
full
professor
in
the
Discipline
of
Chemical
Engineering
at
the
University
of
KwaZulu-Natal
(UKZN)
since
2015.
She
also
holds
the
prestigious
South
African
Research
Chair
Initiative
(SARChI)
Research
Chair
in
Sugarcane
Biorefining
at
UKZN.
Together
with
her
research
group,
she
is
conducting
RDI
into
the
production
of
chemicals,
materials,
and
energy
from
local
biomass;
sugarcane
in
particular.
As
a
co-founder
of
Sucrochem
she
drives
the
technological
development
of
both
wax
extraction
and
subsequent
product
development
(in
terms
of
fractionation,
derivatisation,
and
compounding
of
the
resulting
wax)
for
the
various
market
applications.
Warwick
Thomson
(Managing
Director)
began
his
involvement
with
the
wax
industry,
starting
in
2009,
when
he
developed
South
Africa’s
first
eco-friendly
surf
wax.
Warwick
obtained
his
master’s
degree
in
economics
where
he
conducted
research
in
the
viability
of
producing
bio-based
polymers
from
sugarcane
in
South
Africa.
Warwick
has
experience
in
conducting
feasibility
assessments
for
local
sugar
related
organisations
and
carried
out
his
internship
at
ELFIN
GmbH
in
Cologne,
Germany,
where
he
worked
closely
with
experts
in
agronomy,
organization,
and
marketing
who
develop
implementation strategies in the food and agricultural industry.
