About Us | Contact Sucrochem (PTY) Ltd is a South African start-up company that identifies sustainable approaches towards chemistry and the commercial, and industrial applications thereof, in an evolving world. CONTACT: warwick [at] sucrochem.co.za Background Sucrochem was founded in 2018 by Dr. Anne Stark and Warwick Thomson. During 2016 and 2017 Anne co-supervised Warwick’s master’s thesis as the South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI) Research Chair in Sugarcane Biorefining at the University of Kwazulu-Natal. In 2018, the two met to discuss the potential areas of research in the sugarcane industry when the concept of sugarcane wax was quickly revisited from 2016. Shortly thereafter, Sucrochem was founded. Directors Dr. Anne Stark (Technical Director) holds a PhD in Chemistry and is a full professor in the Discipline of Chemical Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) since 2015. She also holds the prestigious South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI) Research Chair in Sugarcane Biorefining at UKZN. Together with her research group, she is conducting RDI into the production of chemicals, materials, and energy from local biomass; sugarcane in particular. As a co-founder of Sucrochem she drives the technological development of both wax extraction and subsequent product development (in terms of fractionation, derivatisation, and compounding of the resulting wax) for the various market applications. Warwick Thomson (Managing Director) began his involvement with the wax industry, starting in 2009, when he developed South Africa’s first eco-friendly surf wax. Warwick obtained his master’s degree in economics where he conducted research in the viability of producing bio-based polymers from sugarcane in South Africa. Warwick has experience in conducting feasibility assessments for local sugar related organisations and carried out his internship at ELFIN GmbH in Cologne, Germany, where he worked closely with experts in agronomy, organization, and marketing who develop implementation strategies in the food and agricultural industry.
